I’m Kiara Velez—a journalist who believes stories should do more than inform; they should ignite change and report truth.
My work—from investigative features in The Apopka Voice to my internships at WKMG News 6 and WUCF TV PBS—focuses on lifting local voices and unbiased total coverage, whether reporting on immigration, homelessness, or community hard news. Currently, I'm a News Fellow with Spectrum News 13 in Orlando, FL. As Secretary of UCF’s NAHJ Chapter, I’m also working to make sure more voices get a seat at the table.
Let’s tell stories that matter.
As a dedicated student journalist balancing academics, internships, work, and leadership roles, my primary focus is on completing my degree in the Fall of 2026. That said, I welcome meaningful connections, networking opportunities, and conversations about future collaborations in journalism and advocacy. Let’s connect and explore how we can create impact together down the line. Contact me for more information.
I am currently based in Orlando as a student at the University of Central Florida, while maintaining strong ties to South Florida as a Coral Springs native and Miami-born professional. This dual perspective allows me to bring unique insights to stories covering both Central and South Florida communities.
I approach stories with an advocate’s lens and an investigator’s precision—digging into data, amplifying underrepresented voices, and holding power accountable. Every piece begins with deep listening, followed by rigorous fact-checking and ethical storytelling. My goal: to inform with impact and drive meaningful change through journalism.
With a passion for storytelling, I believe in the transformative power of shared experiences to drive positive change. Let’s connect and create impact through the stories we tell.
